Vera Mae (Jones) Pitts-affectionately known as Tott to her loving parents and Moiye to her adoring children - went home to be with the Lord on May 6, 2025, at the age of 93 in McKeesport, PA.
Born on May 15, 1932, in Bowling Green, Alabama, to the late Robert and Cornelia B. Jones, Vera was one of "two and a half" children - her late brother, Robert Jones Jr., and her cousin, Minnie Wilder, who was like a sister to her. Vera accepted Christ at a young age and walked faithfully with Him throughout all of life's seasons.
Vera's life journey took her between Alabama and Pennsylvania, where she attended several schools and proudly earned her GED later in life. She was a woman of remarkable skill and creativity—a seamstress, housekeeper, and cook whose hands could bring anything to life. Whether it was clergy robes, elegant gowns, winter coats, or meals that fed the soul, Vera did it all with grace. Her food, made with love, filled the bellies and hearts of many for decades.
She was a proud member of the Daughters of the Sphinx and the Order of the Eastern Star. She also found joy in puzzles, sewing anything she could get her hands on, and sharing her talents with those around her.
Vera was united in two loving (now late) marriages. From the first union came five beloved children: the late Leroy McCullough (Janet) of Pittsburgh, PA, Dolores Ann Segre (JahP) of Pittsburgh, PA, Vera Mae McCullough (Shelly) of Pittsburgh, PA, Lewis McCullough (the late Dawn) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Lorenda McCullough of Pittsburgh, PA.
Her legacy continues through 15 grandchildren (2 preceded her in death), 39 great-grandchildren (2 also preceded her), and 4 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Known for her sweetness, kindness, and soft-spoken nature, Moiye was truly cherished by all who knew her.
She impacted the lives of her children by simply being a real, present, and loving mom-strong, gentle, and unwavering.
In the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 4:50 a.m., the Lord whispered to our matriarch, "It's time to come home to rest." The angels opened Heaven's gates, and Moiye soared home.
"The Lord's will, will be done." - Vera Mae Pitts
