Vera June Patterson, known by most as “Mama June” was a loving, caring fiercely faithful, and committed woman of God. In her ninety-six-plus years, she lived an eclectic, often painful, but fulfilling life. Born February 28, 1927, she was one of ten children born to Josephine Browning and Spencer Lee Tolbert, Sr. She attended and graduated from McDonald High School in McDonald, PA. She studied Mortuary Sciences with Mr. Percy Law, Sr. in Washington, PA., and worked for a time at White Memorial Funeral Home. She also worked at Weigman’s factory in Wilkinsburg, before joining the Wilkinsburg Police Department, working as a Community Liaison Worker for many years. At the end of her career, she worked as a Personal Care senior Companion throughout Allegheny County. She was also a long-time member of the Mosiwedal Temple #38 IBPOEW of the Hill District. Vera first attended Macedonia Baptist Church, then became a member of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, where she excelled as a soloist in the Concert Choir, bringing joy to all who heard her sing. Vera joined Shiloh Community Missionary Baptist Church on August 14, 2005, where she served faithfully with the missionaries, and became the Church Mother. Vera June was preceded in death by her daughter, Joanne Brown Bunch, parents Josephine Browning and Spencer Lee Tolbert Sr., and siblings Spencer Lee Jr., Harold, George, Doris, Calvin, Frank, and Donald. She is loving remembered by her “adopted daughters”, Gwen-Renee Williams-Landau and Dr. Marian Landau, grandsons Anthony Burch, Sr., Donald Burch, and Samuel Williams III, granddaughters Renee Ann Burch and Jasmine Burch, and her “favorite” great-grandson, Za’Vion Williams. She is also survived by siblings Betty Jean Bartlett of Detroit, Michigan, and Clarence Tolbert of Greensboro, North Carolina; nieces Doris Williams, and Rhonda Leach of Monroeville, PA., and a host of other nieces and nephews. Vera June Patterson’s life was a tribute to her faith in her God, and her love for her fellow humankind. She will be missed by all who knew her well. She is now resting in Eternal Peace, in the loving arms of her Christ Jesus.
