Sally Brown Obituary

Sally Mae Brown (nee White) was born on January 15, 1930 to the late Charley and Hattie White. Raised in East Liberty, she was educated in the Pittsburgh school system graduating from Peabody High School in 1948.

She married her high school sweetheart Alvin in 1951. They had three children, Ruth Christine who passed in 1969 of lupus, Alvin (Butch) Jr and Patricia (Patty) who they primarily raised in Wilkinsburg.

At an early age Sally was baptized in the Mt Ararat Baptist Church and remained a dedicated lifetime member (as did her parents) at times singing in the choir and assisting with the church's newsletter.

Her family including her parents, siblings, nieces and nephews were important to her. She was frequently available to help in any way she could including babysitting. For a long time she annually sent birthday cards to every family member and many of her friends. She often surprised her niece Karla by attending her theatrical productions without first telling her she would be there. She and her husband, Alvin, loved to entertain and often had cook outs, dance or card parties for family and friends.

Her interests also included playing basketball in high school, baking and decorating tasty Christmas cookies and bowling in leagues with her girlfriends, often traveling to out of state tournaments. She also enjoyed going on family vacations, bus trips and cruises with her late husband and AARP club.

She worked for Marriott Hot Shoppes in the East Hills Shopping Center for many years as well as Mellon Bank from which she retired in 1990 to care for her husband prior to his death in 1992.

Sally was a kind, generous and thoughtful person who led a full and enjoyable life. She was pre-deceased by her parents and siblings, Charles White, Catherine Staunton, Rebecca Thomas, Anna Harris and Dorothy White. She leaves to cherish her memories her children Alvin Brown, Jr. of Penn Hills, Patricia Lightsey of Eastampton, NJ, two grandchildren, Robert "Jay" (Ramira) Lightsey II of Eastampton NJ who she affectionately called "my Jaybird" and Jonathan "Jon" (Raja) Weaver of Baldwin Pa. She leaves six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends all who were very special to her. Her children are also grateful for the loving care she received from her Comfort Keepers home health aides during the last two years.
