Pamela Sloan Obituary

A TIME TO BE BORN
Pamela Renae McAllister Sloan was born on September 28, 1958 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the eldest of
ten children born to the late Suff. Bishop Nathan McAllister Sr. and First Lady Gloria Plummer McAllister.
A TIME TO LEARN
Pamela attended the Pittsburgh Public School System where she excelled in her studies. She was the President of the
Junior Achievement Program and enjoyed being connecting with other students. She graduated from Peabody High
School in 1976. After graduation she attended the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a degree in law.
A TIME TO EMBRACE
Pamela and her siblings grew up in the projects in the Garfield Height section of Pittsburgh. Having nine siblings
came with much responsibility. She was either dunking diapers in the toilet, washing glass bottles and nipples,
cooking dinner, or serving as the babysitter for 9 wild children while her parents went to church and shouted all night.
The struggle at times was real and being poor was difficult, however, even when there was nothing but tea and toast to
eat, she and her siblings always found a way to make light of the situation. Pamela’s parents were people who believed
God. It was Jesus when they woke and Jesus when they went to sleep; when she or her siblings was sick it was “Jesus
will heal you;” when they were down and out it was Jesus will lift you; when they were fearful it was, “Perfect love
cast out all fear.”
Pam lived her life full of FAITH and with DETERMINATION!!! She was FEARLESS and FOCUSED. But she was
also human and when you cut her she hurt. She understood and acknowledged her mistakes, asking for forgiveness
and forgave others of theirs. Her life was filled with victories and challenges. however, she never stopped trusting in
God and believing His word. Even when she was on her sick bed, she always reached out to others to let them know
that they were thought about in a special way; sending out birthday wishes, as well extending thoughts and
condolences.
A TIME TO MARRY
Pamela met and married Leon Sloan on June 3, 1978. Together they raised seven children, Starnita Camille, Janet
Finesse, Sarah Elizabeth Renae, Leon Jr., Christopher Keith, Derrian Edwards and Andrew Jacob.
A TIME TO PLANT
Pamela was employed as a daycare worker for Louise Childcare. However, after many years of taking care of children
she and her then husband started a construction company called Sloan Construction. She was meticulous, organized
and well respected in what many viewed as a man’s world. She operated in the spirit of excellence, doing payroll,
contracts, bids etc. Owners of multi-million-dollar companies knew who Pamela was because she commanded
respect.
A TIME FOR PAM TO TESTIFY
“Fourteen years ago, I was suffering from health issues. I collapsed and died. While being transported to the hospital
in the ambulance, I was revived. I remained in the ICU in a coma for almost six weeks and in the hospital for three
months. During those weeks, the prayers of the righteous were continuous and never stopped. My sister, Kimberly
refused to let them remove me from life support even though the odds were against me, and the outlook was not in my
favor. The faith and determination that was birthed from my parents served as the driving force that NO MATTER
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE - JESUSSSSSSSSSSSSS is my Jehovah Rapha, and I would recover.”
“Fast forward… while I slept, the Lord JESUSSSSSSSSSSSSS healed me from several health challenges including
Elephantiasis. The praises of God went up throughout the hospital, and there was NOISE THAT
JESUSSSSSSSSSSSSS WAS IN THE HOUSE!!!!”
“Even though GOD brought me through, the tracheotomy had to remain in my throat because of my damaged lungs -
but it didn’t matter, I was just thankful for being alive. After several more weeks in the hospital, it was time for me to
be discharged. The social workers wanted to send me to a nursing home. I cried to my sister, Kim, please don’t let
them send me to a nursing home because I will die there. It was a challenge, but God gave my sister the words and
wisdom to convince the hospital administration that I could be cared for at home - it would cost less for insurance to
extend care at home than pay over $47,000.00 a month in a nursing home. After they agreed, my best friend who
stuck closer than any brother for many, many years, Jimmie Furby volunteered to be my caregiver. He was trained on
how to do everything needed to give me life sustaining measures and the chance to live.”
“For more than 14 years, Jimmie Furby took care of me. I never had a bed sore or suffered in any way under his care.
Yes, I had others to assist me but, Jimmie was there 24 hours a day… taking care of me and my son Leon Jr. He took
care of my primary needs. He encouraged me, prayed with me, all while keeping Leon Jr. - who is mentally disabled -
cleaned, shaved, dressed, fed, escorted to the bus to go to his job, and pack his lunch, etc. Every Monday, Wednesday,
& Friday for 14 years, he made sure I arrived at the Dialysis center at Presbyterian Hospital. When I was admitted to
the hospital, Jimmie stayed right by my side. Even when I could feel my life coming to close, Jimmie Furby was
there. I want to say to you, Jimmy Furby THANK YOU! Now, I cannot do this next act; but I am asking that all my
family, friends and well-wishers do one last thing for me. Please lend me your feet, hands and voice and stand to
your feet. Please give a round of applause and BIG thank you to Jimmy Furby. To God Be the Glory!”
