Born on September 14, 1949, in Pittsburgh, PA to Gladys and Emmett Carlisle, Mel's journey was marked by dedication to service, family, and professional excellence. A proud graduate of Fifth Avenue High School, he answered his country's call by serving honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. As a Military Policeman with the 728th Military Police Battalion in South Korea, he distinguished himself through exemplary service, earning multiple commendations including the National Defense Service Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
Following his military service, Mel began what would become a remarkable career with Bell Telephone (later Bell Atlantic and then Verizon). Starting as a telephone pole attendant, he demonstrated extraordinary perseverance and capability, rising through the ranks to corporate management – a testament to his unwavering work ethic and natural leadership abilities. After retiring from Verizon, he found joy in a second career as a Security Officer at Rivers Casino, where his warm smile and genuine interest in others earned him countless friendships among both colleagues and guests.
Those who knew Mel will remember his infectious laugh and the way he could light up any room he entered. An early technology enthusiast, he delighted in sharing his passion for innovation with others, always being among the first to embrace new gadgets and digital entertainment systems. His love for chess and bid whist revealed both his strategic mind and his joy in bringing people together.
Mel's greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to Mary Carlisle, a loving father to Courtney, Marvin, Derrick, and stepsons Twan (Marlene) and the late Joseph. Known affectionately as "Pap" or "Pap-pap," he was a cherished grandfather to Carson, Nia, Jalen, Jordan, and Taylor, and took immense joy in his role as great-grandfather to Jordan's three children.
He is survived by his sister Linda (Clyde) and was preceded in death by his siblings Emmett Jr., Gladys, and Marvin. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by his generosity of spirit.
Mel's journey from a young man in Pittsburgh to a respected professional and beloved family patriarch is a story of determination, dignity, and grace. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and that memorable smile that could make anyone's day brighter. His favorite toast with Johnny Walker Red will be remembered by many who shared in his joy of celebrating life's moments, both big and small.
Though he has left us, the warmth of his presence and the strength of his character will continue to guide and inspire all who knew him. Mel Carlisle lived a life that demonstrated the power of perseverance, the importance of family, and the simple joy of making others feel welcome and valued.
