Lowell Patterson Obituary

Lowell Patterson was born on October 10, 1952, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the union of Edward and Joyce (Russ) Patterson.

As a young child, Lowell attended Central Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at the age of 9.  Whenever he talked about his early Christian life, he often talked about the Sunshine Band, the Sunday School program at the Church of God and Christ on Miller Avenue in Pittsburgh. He eventually was welcomed into The Lord’s Church family.  Always remember Lowell as a praying man of great faith.

Lowell attended Fifth Avenue High School until he and his family moved to Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. His activities at Wilkinsburg High School included football, wrestling, and singing in the A Cappella Choir. He met his future wife Gail Adams in the 11th grade where their 52-year relationship began. He graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1970. He continued his education at Clarion State College. While there he played football and worked security, where he was affectionately known as “Officer Dibbles.” As part of pursuing his degree, he also taught driver’s education. He often regaled his family and friends with harrowing stories. Not to be left behind, Gail followed him to college. He graduated from Clarion State College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He immediately began to pursue a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Development but realized his passion was the direct interaction with students, so he changed his major and received a Master’s degree in Education/Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979.  Upon completion, he worked for the Wilkinsburg School District and then the Pittsburgh Board of Education for 35 years retiring in 2010.

On November 19, 1977, Lowell and Gail were married in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. To that union were born three children, son Lowell Anthony Patterson II, and twin daughters Brandeis Ashleigh Patterson and Kristen Amberleigh Patterson. He was truly a family man. He particularly enjoyed traveling with his wife and children and interacting with his grandchildren. To hear his children tell it, he was the best dad and role model.  He was also the family historian with photographs, but with the advent of the camcorder, he quickly switched to film. From football games to parades to wildlife in the backyard to weddings and beyond, he filmed it all. He enjoyed many activities as an adult. First and foremost, he was an avid fisherman. He fished many of the lakes, streams, and creeks in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. He even fished on his honeymoon. Also, he was a baseball umpire from little league to adult programs for many years. He “loved” and watched anything sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Lowell is preceded in death by his daughter Kristen “Amber” Patterson, father Edward Patterson, and brother Gary Patterson. Lowell leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Gail Patterson, children Lowell Patterson (Lynnelle) and Brandy (Marcus) Davis, grandchildren Austin Davis and Kayden Moore, mother Joyce Patterson, siblings Edward Patterson and Cynthia Reynolds as well as a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
