Kenneth G. DeHonney Jr. passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 5, 1940. He was the oldest child of the late Mary Ellen Nelson and Kenneth G. DeHonney.
Ken grew up in the Homewood area of Pittsburgh and graduated from Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh. While at Westinghouse, he was the all-city center and helped the team win three city championships.
Ken joined the Army after high school and received an honorable discharge in January 1965 after serving in the 82nd Airborne. After being discharged, he relocated to Canada where he attended the University of Prince Edward Island and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While at the university, Ken played football as the oldest player on the team. He also coached a H.M.F.A. Pee-Wee Alouettes City Champions in 1988 in Hamilton, Ontario.
In 1976, he attended Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, where he received a degree in Accounting and Finance. While in Ontario, Ken also took courses to become certified as a Licensed Securities Broker and a Licensed Real Estate Salesman.
Upon returning to Pittsburgh in 1990, Ken used his education and training in the financial/accounting field while working as a senior financial analyst, budget analyst, senior accountant and controller. In 2015, he retired as Controller for Primary Care Health Services in Pittsburgh.
Ken married Iva Kelly in September 1993, and became a loving stepfather to sons Michael and Christopher Kelly.
Ken was an avid golfer and loved driving his sports car. One of his fondest memories was when he and Iva travelled to Canada and Atlanta with the top down. He loved sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as connecting with old Westinghouse “Bulldogs.” In addition, Ken was a proud member of the FROGS (Friendly Rivalry Often Generates Success), a social club formed in 1910. Many prominent African American men who were professionals in their vocations have been members of the FROGS.
Preceding him in death was his son Kenneth Jr.; brothers Richard DeHonney and Russell E. Nelson; and loving sister-in-law Carolyn Dorsey.
Ken leaves to mourn his wife Iva and son Josh DeHonney (Melissa); step-sons Michael and Christopher Kelly (Susan); Brothers Charles E. (Pam) and Michael J. Nelson; Kent, Glenn and Loran DeHonney; and Sisters Kimberly and Barbara DeHonney. Rejoicing in his memory are his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and his many friends.
