OBITUARY
John Elwood, Fleming Sr. entered this life on October 29, 1931, in Fairmont, West Virginia, the third child of Louise (Younger) and Robert Fleming. He departed this life peacefully at the Eldercrest Nursing Facility in Baldwin, Pennsylvania on June 9, 2022.
John, at an early age, had to drop out of school and go to work to financially assist his mother and younger siblings after the death of their father. He obtained a job as a coal miner. He then met and married Audrey McCoy, and from this union, he was blessed with two daughters, Cheryl (Fleming) Scarbor and Patricia Louise (Fleming) Creer.
John, after some time relocated to Finleyville, Pennsylvania following his mother and other siblings. He often traveled to a little town known as Library (now South Park) to visit friends and during that time he met and married Irene Elaine Gabriel, and from this union, his blessings increased with five more children. Robyn Janelle, Candace Deneen, John Elwood, Jr., Terri Lanelle, and an adopted daughter Crystale Evette Gabriel.
John retired from coal mining after working for 30+ years. After retirement and for a short period of time he was a bartender at the now-defunct Sebolt Café. In his later years to supplement his income he worked at a local fast-food restaurant.
John was somewhat of a quiet, behind-the-scenes type of man. He always like to dress, however, and in doing so made quite an impression. No matter where he was going, he wore dress pants, polos, suits, ties, Kangols, and of course his shiny Stacey Adams shoes. He affectionately was known to many as Mr. John and by one of our aunts as “Johnny Cakes”. He was also very giving to anyone that would ask for his assistance, whatever the need.
John, most importantly, was led to give his life to Christ. He would receive visits from various Christian individuals in the community and from members of Mt. Zion. He made apologies for wrongdoings in his life for whatever and to whomever, he caused hurt or pain. He shared with his daughter Robyn, that in doing so he felt at peace.
John was preceded in death by both of his parents, all of his siblings, Robert Jr., known to many as Mack, Jean, Herbert and Howard, known to many as Babe. Both of his wives, Audrey and Irene, and a daughter Candace.
John leaves to cherish his memory, 6 children, Cheryl, Patti, Crystale Robyn (Aaron), John Jr, and Terri; 13 grandchildren, Clarence Creer III, Michelle Lynn (Creer) Wise, Lisa Fleming, Cosean, Kiesha, Christopher, Xiomara, Anthony, Charneece, Joshalyn, Robert(Laura), Myles and Benjamin; 23 great-grandchildren, Paix, Cierra, Darryl, Trey, Brandon, Tevin, Christopher(Jade), Kaylee, Nyah, Caxias, Sarah, Jaylen, Quintin, Xavier, Marc, Kayden, Mia, Amira, Grayson, Gabrielle, Saviah, Braydon and Isaac; 1 great-great-granddaughter Ariel and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
