John Ezell Obituary

John Ezell, 61, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was called to glory on April 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 29, 1964, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John was the beloved son of the late Bernice Ezell. He was raised in South Oakland, where he built lifelong friendships and deep roots in the community before later residing in Swissvale.

John attended Schenley High School, where he met the love of his life, Kim. Their connection grew into a lasting partnership, and they later married, building a life grounded in love, family, and shared memories. After high school, John continued his education, completing an electronics technician program at the Community College of Allegheny County, and also attended ITT Technical Institute.

In the 1980s, John moved to New Jersey to pursue a career opportunity with AC Nielsen’s television ratings company, gaining valuable experience before ultimately returning home to Pittsburgh. Throughout his career, he worked for several organizations, but he spent the majority of his years with the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh. He was a skilled electronics technician and a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 95, where he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and commitment.

John was a man of many passions. He was an avid sports fan, with a special love for baseball and football. He proudly supported the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers and had a deep appreciation for the history and legacy of the Negro Leagues. He also had a deep love for music—especially funk and jazz—and could often be found listening to the radio, enjoying the sounds that brought him joy. John loved history in all its forms, with a particular interest in military history, and he was deeply passionate about genealogy, taking pride in learning and preserving his family’s story.

He also had a love for aviation and enjoyed watching planes, finding peace in the skies above. He appreciated the quiet beauty of nature through bird watching and took pride in gardening, nurturing things with the same care he gave to the people in his life. He loved to cook, travel, and spend time with family and friends.

He found joy in life’s simple, meaningful moments—washing his car, sitting out on the porch, and firing up the grill. John was a true grill master and the nucleus of family holidays and cookouts, bringing people together with food, laughter, and love.

More than anything, John will be remembered for the way he showed up for others. He was deeply loved because he was deeply kind. Dependable, generous, and genuine, John would do anything for the people in his life. He was the kind of person you could always count on—a truly remarkable man whose presence made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Kim Roberts Ezell; his daughter, Brittany Ezell (Todd Lee); his son, Evan Ezell; his sisters, Dee Pamplin (Mark Kmetic) and Sherry Smith; his sister-in-law, Jean Ezell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Ezell; his brother, Benjamin Ezell; and his beloved dog, Tico Parker Ezell.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, there will be no traditional funeral service. While John’s passing is a profound loss, his family chooses to honor him in a way that reflects who he was—a man of joy, warmth, and connection. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will come together to share laughter, music, and memories—the way John would have wanted.

While there will be no traditional funeral service, the family recognizes that many may wish to share condolences, send cards, flowers, or other thoughtful expressions.
