Joan Elizabeth Washington

Born September 16, 1935, Joan Washington passed to be with the Lord on August 29, 2023 at the age of 87. She is the second oldest of six children from the union of the late Henry Williams Sr. And the late Willa Griffin Williams.
Joan graduated from Schenley High School in 1953 and went on to work in nursing homes as a Tray Girl and later became a Nurse’s Aide.
Joan married Marion Washington Jr. in June of 1954 and they were together for over 60 years before his passing in 2019. Of this union was born three children the late Steven Washington, Craig Washington, and the late Donna Terry. She also gained and raised two more children Erika Cox and Stepheny Washington.
While raising her family, Joan went on to attend nursing school at Conley Trade where she earned her state license and L.P.N. Upon completion, she opened the Independent Nurses Registry which was the first Black owned Registry in Western Pennsylvania. She employed over 200 Nurses and 175 Nurse’s Aides. She operated her registry for approximately 15 years until she retired.
She was preceded in death by son Steven Washington, her daughter Donna Terry, her husband Marion Washington Jr., her mother Willa Williams, her father Henry Williams, sister Edith Cook, brothers, Henry and Frank Williams.
She is survived by her children Craig Washington, Erika Cox, Stepheny Washington. One brother Lloyd Williams, two sisters Jacqueline Terry, Alfreda Gross. Grandsons Edward Hyatt Jr, Cameron Hopkins, Stephan Martin, and a host of granddaughters, nieces, nephews, and friends.
