On January 5, 1962 in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania James Sumpter Bailey Jr. was born to the parents of James Sumpter Bailey Sr. and Pauline Regina Bailey. James peacefully departed from this life on Friday, January 2, 2026, and called home to join our beautiful mother.
He is survived by his wife Sadie Bailey Stepchildren: Brittney Griffin, Todd Griffin, Lauren Griffin, Shayonna Griffin, and Taylor Hatching. Siblings: Bernadine Ann Bailey, Lisa Marie Brown, Tyrone Wilmer Bailey, Brandon Bailey, Precious Bailey, Tony Bailey, Tiffany Bailey, Kia Bailey, and Timothy O'Donnell. Children: Brandon Allen Johnson oldest surviving child, Ciarra Lynn Johnson, Ryan Jordan Bailey, Shay Gene Bailey, Taylor Pauline Bailey, Adeena Shereen Bailey, James Sumpter Bailey III, James Sumpter Bailey IV, and Tarea Lacole Jones Grandchildren: Kaiden Lee McGee, Joell Lorenzo Daniels, Robby Jordan Bailey, Ziayr Jones, Tarell Jones, Baron Jones, Grace Jones, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He graduated from Westinghouse High School where he excelled in basketball and had an extreme love for all sports. An avid fan of our hometown team the Pittsburgh Steelers and he never missed watching a game while enthusiastically charging everyone up with the infamous chant “Here we go Steelers!” He was a loyal brother, father, friend, protector, and mentor to those that had the pleasure of meeting him. He always greeted everyone with that signature Bailey smile. He worked for the City of Pittsburgh, and after many years of employment he gladly welcomed retirement in 2024.
He was a gentle giant with a can-do spirit who loved and lived life to the fullest. He never left an event or family gathering without saying ”I love you.” He had a genuine care for humanity and always lended a helping hand to those in need. Although he is gone in presence he will always be remembered in our hearts forever.
