Gwendolyn Harris Obituary

On the morning of Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Gwendolyn Gail Harris, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated servant of God, passed away peacefully at the age of 87. Born on October 31, 1937, in Gadsden, Alabama, she was the cherished daughter of the late Horace D. and Berniece M. (Chandler) Stroud. The eldest of four siblings, her early years were spent in the warm embrace of a loving family that later relocated to Pittsburgh, where she would make a lasting impact on her community through her musical and spiritual endeavors.

Gail's academic journey began at Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh, where she graduated with honors in 1955, establishing a strong foundation for her future endeavors. In 1957, she earned a two-year medical secretarial diploma, also with honors, from the Business Training College, now known as Point Park University. Her thirst for knowledge did not wane; she pursued her passion for biblical studies at Harty Bible School, graduating in 1996 with a four-year diploma. Continuing her commitment to community enrichment, Gail obtained a Certificate in Community Ministry from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary’s Metro Urban Institute in 2000. In a remarkable testament to her lifelong love of learning, she achieved her Bachelor of Arts in Community Ministry from Geneva College at the remarkable age of 65, inspiring many with her tenacity and demonstrating that education knows no age limits. Her dedication to her studies and unwavering belief in the transformative power of education will continue to inspire future generations.

In 1957, Gail married Donald B. Langford, and together they welcomed three beautiful daughters: Rochelle, Monique, and Felecia, the latter of whom preceded her in death. Gwendolyn's family was her pride and joy, and her love for her daughters was unwavering.

Gail's life was profoundly enriched when she married Arthur L. Harris Jr., forming a loving partnership that would last for decades. This marriage also included two stepsons, Arthur and William. Together, they raised a vibrant family, including five children, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Her legacy will continue through them, as they carry forward the values of faith, love, and service she instilled in them.

Gail, a musical virtuoso classically trained from the age of eight, was much more than her familial roles. Her passion for music flourished as she performed with various orchestras, including the Westinghouse High School, Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, and Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestras. Answering a divine calling, she devoted her life to God through her music, while as a teen serving as a church musician at the Nazarene Baptist Church in Homewood. She contributed her talents to the Sunday School and Youth Choir at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church and later became the Director of the Senior Choir.

Throughout her remarkable career, Gail traveled the world, serving as a musician for Army and Air Force Chapels in Taipei, Taiwan, and Misawa, Japan. Upon her return to Washington, D.C./Maryland, she directed the Gospel Chorus at St. James Baptist Church before returning to Sixth Mt. Zion. For nearly three decades, she led the music ministry, ultimately becoming the Minister of Music until her retirement in 2001. Her tenure was marked by deep spiritual connections, as she and her mentor, Ruby M. Gould, shared a profound bond that transcended music, embodying the love of Christ in their ministry. Even after retiring, her commitment to music ministry reignited in 2015, as she took on the role of Minister of Music at St. James Episcopal Church, where her son-in-law serves as pastor.

Gail's devotion was not limited to music; she was also called to preach and was licensed and ordained serving as an Associate Minister at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Her commitment to the community was unwavering, as she actively participated in outreach programs, including the "Have Prayer Will Travel, Inc." ministry, known affectionately as the "praying grandmothers" and the Jesus House of Refuge Baptist Ministries, where she provided solace and support to those in need. She impacted the lives of many through her compassion, teaching, and heartfelt prayers.

Gail's impact extended beyond her immediate community, as she traveled to share the Gospel, conducted workshops, and served music ministries in assisted living facilities and at local veteran's hospitals. In recognition of her contributions to preserving the rich history of African American gospel music in the Greater Pittsburgh region, she was honored with the Rankin/Mon Valley/Pittsburgh National Council of Negro Women Legacy Award.

Gail is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Arthur L. Harris Jr.; her daughters, Rochelle Johnson (Geoffrey) and Monique McIntosh (Eric); her stepsons, Arthur L. Harris III and William G. Harris (Shazia); her step daughters, Deborah Camper and Leah DeBold (Lothar); her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her siblings, Dennis Michael Stroud and Maryann Lightfoot (James); and numerous nieces and nephews who will treasure her memory.

Gwendolyn Gail Harris's life was a testament to faith, resilience, and unwavering love. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who follow in her footsteps. A devoted servant of God, she embraced her call with grace and fervor, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a heartfelt prayer. Her spirit will forever resonate in the music she loved, in the lives she touched, and in the hearts of her family and friends.
