Gloria L. Sweeney-Carter departed this life after a brief stay at the North Hills Rehabilitation Center in North Hills, PA on August 9, 2024, at the age of 93. She was born on August 30, 1930, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late John and Iris (Overby) Washington.
Gloria was the oldest of six children. She was educated at the Lincoln School and attended Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh PA. In 1947, she married Paul Sweeney, and that union produced a son, Glenn Able Sweeney. Gloria then married Hurd Carter creating a beautiful blended family with her son Glenn.
However, Gloria's love for the city would make Pittsburgh her final place of residence. In her earlier years, Gloria enjoyed entertaining family, hosting parties and having barbecues; having her family around gave her pure enjoyment. She also enjoyed taking bus trips to various casino locations, travelling to sport events and she always enjoyed going to jazz venues and participating in social mixes. Her favorite pastime was watching old movies and Westerns, especially those featuring actor John Wayne.
"Glo" as she was affectionately called, is preceded in death by her son, Glenn Sweeney; her late husband, Paul Sweeney and her late husband, Hurd Carter; parents, John and Iris Washington; brothers, Sylvester, Donald and Thomas; and her very close friend who was like a sister to her, Ruby Sheffey. She leaves to mourn; her sisters Irene (Lynwood) McBride and LaVerne (Arthur) Washington-Jackson; both residing from Evans City, PA.
She is also survived by her Aunt Alice Butler of New Jersey, servicing sister in-law Antoinette (Thomas) Washington of Pittsburgh, grandsons Alfred, Gregory, Khalid LEster and granddaughter Tammy Lester as well as Jackie Lester of Illinois, the mother of the grandchildren, God daughter Roxsanne Sheffey, and great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and friends.
