Sis. G Henry Bey was born on October 22, 1940, to Ernest Powell and Grace Powell in the Morningside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Her family included her four siblings Ernest Powell Jr (Mable)., Corlene “Winky” (Donald), Margaret (Raymond), and Grace. Gloria, born Gloria Powell had several nicknames including Dorey, Glory, Toof, Ms. Bey, and Gran. She graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1959.
Shortly after high school, she met Richard H. Bey who quickly swept her off her feet. She met Richard while he was on leave from the Air Force, and they married on Sept. 10th, 1960. She then moved to California where Richard was stationed and worked as a dietician in hospitals for a few years. From this union came Bro. Udraka H. Bey and preceded in death Sis. Sakara H. Bey, Cyrene H. Bey, Bro. Barata H. Bey, Matheno Bey, and Bramas Bey. In 1961, Sis G. Henry Bey proclaimed her nationality and birthright by uniting in the Moorish Science Temple of America accepting Allah as her God and Noble Drew Ali as her Prophet. After Richard was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1965, they returned home to Pittsburgh, PA to bury Gloria’s mother and raise their family in Gloria’s mother and father’s home. In 1984, Bro. R. Henry Bey and Sis. G. Henry Bey renewed their vows in Islam in Aiken, South Carolina.
Once back in Pittsburgh Gloria devoted her life to her family and the Moorish Science Temple of America. Gloria dedicated most of her years to being a housewife and a caregiver for her family members. Gloria was a social butterfly. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family members and always had an open door and a hot meal for the Temple members when they came to visit Pittsburgh. Gloria’s favorite thing to do in her spare time was going to Bingo. You could call that her place of “employment” and she was very fortunate when it came to the game. She also loved going out to dinner with her family, the casino, and any other events she was as invited to.
Gloria loved her second family, The members of the Moorish Science Temple of America. She raised her three generations of family under the Moorish creed. She traveled to different temples and practiced Islam until her final days. She was an Adept member and Grand Sheikess of the Moorish Science temple. She cherished the knowledge of her elders and the teachings of the prophet. 0 Although she will be truly missed Gloria’s life is a celebration. She lived a beautiful life indeed. Her strength was unmatched. She overcame all her challenges in life by keeping her Trust in Allah and living by the five principles Love, Truth, Peace, Freedom, and Justice. She was beyond self-less. She always focused on the positive that people had in them and poured love into everyone she encountered.
She is survived by her son Udraka H. Bey, her daughter n law Diantha Bey, her niece Marlene El (Charles), her brother Ernest Powell’s wife (Mable), and children Donna, Tina, Dwight, Ernie, and Robbie. Her beloved great-nephew Benares Bey. Her sister Margie’s son Raymond. Her grandchildren Marcus, Tiara, Lashai I, Barata Bey, Sydney Stephens, and Jade Stephens. She was proceeded in life by her grandson Jemel Bey. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren who she adored Tysean Bey, Christian Stevens Jr., Marcus Bey Jr, Jemiya Bey, baby Diantha, and Jaharee. Her sister-in-law Spanky Wilson and brother-in-law Sidney T. Chambers Jr. Along with a host of other friends and family members.
