Gertrude “Peggy” Jennings, affectionately known as “Ms. Young,” “Aunt Peggy,” or “Mom” to many, was born on January 25, 1941, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Clarence McDonald and Bernice Wanamaker. She departed this life on April 29, 2025, to begin her eternal rest.
Raised in the Hill District and Homewood, Peggy attended Homewood Elementary, Baxter Middle School, and graduated from Westinghouse High School (the House doesn’t move). Her strong educational foundation supported a diverse career. She worked for many years in the Wilkinsburg School District as a paraprofessional in Special Education, serving children with social and emotional challenges. She also directed several afterschool programs in Wilkinsburg and operated a home daycare for many years.
In April 1987, Peggy was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Ghost at Refuge Temple Church under the late Bishop Alexander A. Stokes. She served faithfully as Pastor’s Aid President, choir member, Missionary, and more. Later, she joined Chief Cornerstone Church under Elder Shawn Walthour, serving as Pastor’s Aid President and youth Sunday School Teacher, and most recently was a devoted member of Faith Temple Lighthouse Church under District Elder Joseph Long. Peggy married the love of her life, George “Fa Fa” Jennings of Morgantown, WV, blending their families into one devoted unit.
She leaves a legacy of love and impact through her husband George Jennings Sr.; her son Charles Young; stepson George Anthony (Emily) Jennings of Lawrence, MA; stepdaughter Cathy Jennings; grandchildren Dareian Young, Jordan Young, Dominga Horner, Yonna Edwards, LaMonica Young, Lamont Jackson, James Walthour, and Jeremiah Walthour; and spiritual daughters Paulette “Daughter N’em” Davis and Charita Collins. She is also remembered by a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Clarence (Tiny) and John (Butch), sisters Irma Jean Stubbs and Virginia (Ginny) McDonald, sons Lionel Lamont Walker and Lance McDonald Young, and daughter Lisa Agnes Walthour. Peggy touched countless lives and will be deeply missed. Her love and legacy live on in all who knew her.
