Gertrude Hamlet Obituary

Gertrude “Gert” Geneva Hamlet (Gaunt), 70, of Monroeville, PA departed this life peacefully at home on June 16, 2020 after a brief illness. She was born on September 20, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA to Clyde Gaunt, Sr (deceased) and Helen Gaunt (deceased). She had two sisters, Frances Hinds (Gaunt) and Patricia Ann Gaunt (deceased), and two brothers, Clyde Gaunt Jr, and Clarence Gaunt. They were raised in the Garfield section of Pittsburgh. Gertrude was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School System graduating from Peabody High School in 1967. She obtained her nursing degree from the Community College of Allegheny County. Gertrude worked at the Pittsburgh Veterans Health Care System in Aspinwall starting in 1968 and retiring in 2006 after 38 years of faithful service. Her marriage to Robert C. Hamlet, Jr (deceased) produced two loving and dedicated children, Stephanie A. Woods (Gaunt) and Robert C. Hamlet III, both of Pittsburgh, PA. Affectionately known as “Nan” to her grandkids and “Gi-Gi “ to her great grandkids, Gertrude enjoyed spending time with her family and always looked forward to family get togethers during the summer and holidays. An avid reader, Gertrude also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She will always be remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. Gertrude accepted Christ as her Lord and savior at an early age and was a faithful and dedicated member of Shiloh Community Missionary Baptist Church of Pittsburgh, PA, working as Co-Director in the Youth Ministry, instilling the love of God in children through Vacation Bible School. Teaching was truly her passion, she taught Sunday school, New Member classes, New teacher training classes, and for the Allegheny Union Baptist Association (AUBA). Gert was President of the Altar Guild Ministry and started the breakfast ministry which was held in-between church services. Gert was a true servant, rising to whatever task was needed. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Patricia, and beloved grandson Marcus “Marky” Woods. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Stephanie and Robert, grandchildren Sasha Woods, Curtis Woods, Jr and Taylor Woods of Pittsburgh, PA, and Tayler Michelle Vaca Chatman and Robert C. Hamlet, IV of Las Vegas, NV; great grandchildren A’nya Woods-Wright, Curtis Woods III, Aiden Curtin and Akai Woods of Pittsburgh, PA and Koby Bo-Morris and Abigails Rose Walsh of Las Vegas, NV. For the last few years of her life, she was in a committed relationship with a very special friend, Edward Heard of Pittsburgh, PA. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, church family, friends and neighbors who will fondly and forever treasure her lasting memories.
