Gertrude was born to the late Irvin Blakey and Celia Blakey in Charlottesville, Virginia. She worked many jobs as a nurse's aide and bartender. Her favorite job was working as a dietary aide at her grandma's school.
Gertrude was a caring and loving person. There was nothing she wouldn't do for the kids. To this day, people always say to her daughter, "Remember your Mom used to feed us death?" She enjoyed traveling, the casino, playing cards, watching the Steelers and being with family and friends.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Byron Curtis, her brothers Irvin Blakey Jr., Charles Blakey, James Lee Blakey, Raymond Blakey and her sisters Isabella Blakey and Estelle Blakey.
She leaves to cherish, her brother Preston Blakey (Joyce), and sister Myrtle Blakey Tyree, her two children Gregory Broxton and Shirley Swinton (Andre) and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
