Frances Hinds Obituary

Frances Louise Hinds was born on August 10, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to her parents Clyde L. Gaunt and Helen Gaunt. she grew up in the Garfield section of Pittsburgh. Frances graduated from Peabody High School in 1965. Following her graduation, she attended business school for secretarial studies. Upon graduating from business school, Frances worked her entire career at the now defunct St. Francis Medical center, which is now Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

While in high school, Frances met Oliver T. Carter Jr., who attended her rival school, Westinghouse High School. They later married and had three daughters, Nichelle, Damara, and Tawnya. Frances and Oliver later divorced. Frances found love again later and married Monte C. Hinds of Brooklyn, New York. Frances relocated to Brooklyn for a while but later returned to her hometown. Frances remained married to Monte until he passed away in 2020.

Frances was a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Stars where she held various positions. Frances' final residence was at the Homewood Station Senior Apartments. She enjoyed living thee where she had a lot of friends. Frances enjoyed being involved with a lot of the events that took place there. At one time, she was the Tenant Council President. She took pride in her role, especially her interactions in the local political scene. Although she stepped down from the position after a few years, she still acted as an honorary president and remained involved with a lot of the activities. 

Frances enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, getting her hair and anils done and watching her favorite game show, Family Feud (the one hosted by Steve Harvey). She also enjoyed her weekly Wednesday game nigh with her friends at Homewood Station. It was best that you did not call her when game night was going on! Frances lived a life filled with love, laughter and good times. 

On the evening of October 31, 2025, after celebrating the 21st birthday of her youngest grandson, Ivan, Frances descended the steps of her daughter Damara's house one final time. She sat at the bottom of the steps, said that she was tired, and began her transition. She was blessed to be surrounded by her family.

Frances was predeceased by her parents, Clyde L. Gaunt, Sr. and Helen Gaunt; her sisters, Gertrude Hamlet and Patricia Gaunt; and her brother Clarence Gaunt. Frances is survived by her daughters, Nichelle (Leon, deceased) Mickens, Damara Carter and Tawnya (Melvin) Brown; her brother, Clyde Gaunt, Jr.; her grandchildren, Chayla, Jade, Tamia, Sydney, Bryce, and Ivan; her great-granddaughter, Milan; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
