Evora Towns Obituary

Evora Walton Towns, 91, of Pittsburgh, PA, formerly of Fredericktown, PA peacefully passed away on August 8, 2021 at Juniper Village of Forest Hills.

Evora was the second of 12 children born to the late Rev. Mack and Mrs. Larnell Roberts Walton. She and her identical twin sister, Eleanor (Elnora) were born on October 15, 1929 in Brownsville, PA.

Evora accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age, and was a life-long woman of God. Shortly after graduating from Brownsville High School in 1947, she married Lucious C. Towns, Jr. Their only child, Wilma, preceded them in death in 1965. Four siblings that preceded her in death were Mack, Eleanor (Elnora) Horton Dawson; Shirley Steele Pride, and Frank.

Mrs. Towns regularly attended churches pastored by her father. After moving to Pittsburgh, she became a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church (EBC) in the Hill District. While at Ebenezer she held many offices including Deaconess and Director of Missions. She was active in the Western Region Mission of the Pennsylvania State Baptist Convention which honored her as A Woman of Distinction for her service. She loved decorating EBC for special occasions. Most members knew when they came to join in the celebrations at EBC that Miss Evora had something to do with it. She was known for her sense of fashion and style because of her many elaborate outfits that always were accentuated with a one-of-a-kind hat.

Evora was a licensed beautician who had her own beauty business prior to moving to Pittsburgh. She also was known for her culinary expertise. The Hyman Katz Family hired her as a professional cook in the 60s. Evora enjoyed working for the Katz Family which included two young sons, Jimmy and Harry whom she grew to love dearly.

Mrs. Towns leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Larnell Cox of Conyers, GA; Samuel (Bettie) of Detroit, MI; Vernell Steele of Long Beach, CA; John (Sharon) of Twinsburg, OH; Rev. Dr. Mary L. Walton of Long Beach, CA; Sarah F. Scott of Temple Hills, MD; Aaron A. Walton (Gloria) of Cheyney, PA and Lakewood Ranch, FL; sister-in-law, Evalena Walton of Temple Hills, MD; brother-in-law, Coolidge Pride of Detroit, MI; Harry Katz of New York, NY; and James Katz and daughter, Danielle, of Pittsburgh; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Family and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2001 Wylie Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at EBC on Saturday, August, 21 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church.
