Esther Lelia Broughton was born June 12, 1929, to Russell C. and Sadie Jefferson in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Learning of the love of Jesus happened at a young age growing up in the church as a preacher's daughter. She was baptized at her Father Russell Jefferson's church at New Light Baptist Church in Oakland, PA.
Esther was married to the late James Broughton, Sr in 1952. Five sons and one daughter were born into this union. James Broughton Jr., Duane Broughton, Melvin Broughton, Clinton Broughton, Carl Broughton, and Pamela Broughton.
Esther never graduated; she left school in the 11th grade to take care of her mother, Sadie. She then worked at West Penn hospital as a transporter and housekeeper. Her passion was for helping others. She believed she was called to do nursing because she loved helping others and believed in the power of healing.
Esther Broughton was ordained a Deaconess at New Light Baptist Church under the late Rev. Russell C. Jefferson. She then joined Shiloh Community Missionary Baptist Church in 1989 and served as a Deaconess for 34 years.
Esther stood firmly, knowing that trusting the Lord was the key to a Godly walk. She exercised great faith daily and encouraged everyone around her to do the same. She was indeed a strong woman of God. Everyone who had an encounter with her could not walk away without knowing the goodness of Jesus.
Her life was preceded in death by her parents, Russell C. and Sadie Jefferson, her husband, James Broughton Sr., sons Melvin and Carl Broughton, and siblings Russell Jr., William, Juanita, and Thelma Jefferson.
Esther is survived by her sister Lily May Manuel, children James Jr., Duane, Clinton, and Pamela Broughton, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
