Doris Lassitter-Simpson Obituary

On May 16, 2021 at 6:20 am, God assigned an Angel to Kane Community Living Center Ross Township to escort Dorothy Louise Thornton home. She was born on March 19, 1931, an only child, to the late Louie and Helen Davis Truitt. At a young age she spent a lot of time with her grandmother, the late Rebecca Saunders, who groomed her to become the sweet and wonderful lady she was. She educated in the Pittsburgh public school system.
She married the” love of her life” the late Albert Thornton Sr, on November 28, 1953. To this union, there were not any children born. However, Dorothy accepted all neighborhood children and cousins into her life and surrounded them with love. They traveled to many different cities and enjoyed every moment together. She also worked extremely hard in the Caregiving field to assist Albert in purchasing their home in Sewickley Township. They won awards on their street for having the most beautiful lawn. They purchased a miniature collie, which they named Princess. Which was inadvertently Dorothy’s child and she treated her just like a Princess.
Once Albert retired and could not work on his lawn the way he wanted. Dorothy convinced him to sell, and they moved to Metowers Senior Facility, in Avalon PA. Where they lived for over 30 years. While during her residency there she took meals, visited, and read to the sick and shut in. She had her mother to move directly across the hall from her and cared for her until she went with the Lord. When Albert was stricken with Dementia, she nursed him until his last breath.
Dorothy loved the Lord and always had a positive way of looking at each encounter and never faltered. She became extremely talented in ceramics and crocheting. Around her home and all friends & relatives’ homes were elements of her talents displayed.
In the last few years, when her health began to decline, and most of her relatives in the Pittsburgh area had either passed on or were ailing. Dorothy met an amazing couple by the name of Jim & Kathy Miller to whom she always lovingly called” baby”. Who stuck by her side through every pain, sorrow & need and were her earthly angels sent to guide and protect her through her illness.
In addition to her parents and husband Albert, she was preceded in death by her Aunt Gertrude Farrell & Cousin Sherdina B. Prince. Dorothy leaves to cherish her fond memories, her niece Ronelle Smith & her cousins, Robin D Willis, Richard J Farrell & Willie D Prince and a few more cousins & friends.
