Obituary

Dolores W. Smith (Dee) was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Sunday morning, April 23, 2023.  This date also marked the celebration of her 90th birthday, both here on earth, and in heaven!  She was the widow of MSG Sylvester C. Smith, and a longtime resident of Penn Hills.

Born to Sadie and Harvey Chatman, Dee was the youngest of 6 children. The family moved from Cedar Bluff, Alabama to Homewood in Pittsburgh, PA where Dee grew up.  She later graduated from Westinghouse High School and was employed at Iron City Uniform.

She met and married her first love, Sylvester, on November 4, 1961.  The proud wife of a Sargent in the US Army, Dee facilitated meetings to mentor new army wives, and worked at commissaries throughout his commission.  During the next 23 years, the two travelled to various bases and lived in Maryland, Georgia, Colorado, California, Germany and Hawaii. They truly enjoyed people wherever they went.

Upon Sylvester's retirement, they returned to the stateside and purchased their home in Penn Hills. Over the next several years, Dee worked for Sears and then Gimbels Department Store, and was a member of the WEMCO Club.  Sylvester worked for and retired from the US Postal Service.  He was called to his heavenly home in August 1996.

During her "Second Act" Dee tended her garden, fed her birds, and spent time laughing and lunching with family and friends.  She also continued to travel.  Along the way she met a new traveling companion, Jewel Tolliver, who became her new love.  They remained committed to each other until her death.

Preceding her in death were her parents, siblings and husband.  She leaves to celebrate her life two nieces: Donna J. Moore (Kerry), and Jo-Ann L. Simonson and two nephews: Robert Chatman (Cecelia) and Michael Chatman (Youlanda); her adopted daughter Helena Green, her adopted son, James Porter Jr; and a host of family and friends all over the US.
