Derrick “Big D” Hemby was a man whose nickname said it all — he carried one of the biggest hearts of anyone you would ever meet. His genuine love for people was his gift to the world. Born on August 23, 1962 to the late Earl and the late Magnolia Hemby, Derrick was raised in Homewood, where his roots ran deep. From an early age, he could be found with his beloved late brother, Andre, and Iggy, his best friend and extended brother. He followed in his father’s footsteps, soaking up lessons on hard work and how to run a business.
Derrick graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1980, known as “Hammer”, he proudly served as captain of the football team. He even went on to play semi-pro and never stopped being a Bulldog. A true Pittsburgher through and through, Big D’s passion for the Steelers was legendary; win or lose, he cheered them on with the same fire.
While he wore many titles throughout his life, his greatest role was that of family man. Derrick married the love of his life, Carla, in 1997 and together they built a life defined by love, loyalty, and laughter. His pride and joy were their children Derrick (Ahdawnah) Hemby, Shawn Hemby, Edward (Monique) Sadik, and Courtnei Sadik as well as grandchildren Dimeran, Terrell, Deandre, Dumier, Asa, Aiden, Carter, Cali along with niece, Sharise (William) Nance.
Derrick’s entrepreneurial spirit was as bold as his personality. Over the years, he built and ran several successful businesses, most notably The Galaxy Lounge and Entertainment Center. To him, his businesses weren’t just places of work — they were family. He had a gift for seeing potential in people, and he gave countless Homewood residents opportunities that turned into lifelong friendships. Many who started out as employees became part of his extended family.
Big D’s commitment to his community ran just as deep. Derrick poured his heart into Homewood, giving back in ways both big and small — from hosting the Galaxy’s Annual Toy Drive to raising funds for grieving families and donating to neighborhood causes. He understood that true success meant lifting others along the way, and he never hesitated to share what he had.
Just a few years ago, Derrick fulfilled a dream of building his beloved Carla her dream home where they built beautiful memories. Living across from a golf course gave him the chance to enjoy one of his favorite pastimes, and he could often be found on the green with friends. Throughout their years, he and Carla loved to travel together, their bond and devotion evident to all who knew them.
Big D was a fighter until the very end. On September 28, 2025, he soared to glory, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity. Preceding him in death are his brother, his mother, and his father. His spirit will live on through his wife, children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and the countless friends and neighbors who loved him dearly.
Those who knew Derrick will remember not only his larger-than-life presence but the way he made everyone feel welcomed and cared for. His life was a living example of community, loyalty, and love — and while his absence will be deeply felt, his impact will continue to shine in Homewood and beyond.
