David Raines Jr. was born on June 22, 1949, to David Raines Sr. and Mathilda Raines in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His early years were marked by profound loss, as he tragically lost his father at the age of eight and, soon after, his younger brother, Alexander "Butchie" Raines. In the face of these hardships, David took on significant responsibilities at a young age, assuming a leadership role within his family. As a teenager, he played a pivotal role in raising his seven siblings, instilling in them the values of integrity, perseverance, and respect— qualities that helped shape them into upstanding members of society. David attended Schenley High School, where he showcased his athletic talent as a track runner. However, due to health complications, he was unable to continue the sport. Undeterred, he remained committed to his education and graduated in 1969. He then pursued higher education at Robert Morris College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting. Despite his academic achievements, opportunities in his field of study were limited, leading him to forge a different path. Determined to provide for his family, David transitioned his part-time dishwashing job into a long and successful career. He dedicated 33 years of service as a Fourth Level Cook at the Veterans Administration Hospital, where his hard work and commitment were widely respected. Through his unwavering dedication, he ensured a stable and fulfilling life for his wife, son, and grandchildren. David was a man of strong principles, known for his charismatic personality, firm yet compassionate nature, and unwavering sense of responsibility. His wisdom, guidance, and steadfast support strengthened not only his family but also those who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence was a source of wisdom and encouragement, leaving an enduring impact on the lives he touched. David Raines Jr. is survived by his beloved wife, Anzola Raines, his devoted son, David Raines III, and his cherished grandchildren. His legacy of love, resilience, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
