David Gittings Sr.

David Gittings Sr., surrounded by loved ones, peacefully passed away on October 2, 2024. Born on October 5, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late William and Willou Gittings, David moved to Pittsburgh at the tender age of five where he attended the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

David’s journey began as a car washer, a humble start that would lead to a fulfilling career. He worked part time as a janitor at two complexes in Dormont for over four decades, and later dedicated 33 years to the Board of Education as a full-time janitor. His passion for his work was evident in his dedication and enjoyment of his roles.

A devoted member of Christian Tabernacle Kodesh Church of Immanuel ,where David was baptized and served faithfully as a Janitor, Usher and Trustee. His love for music was reflected in his appreciation for jazz, blues and gospel. He also enjoyed watching westerns, soap operas and his favorite football teams, The Pittsburgh Steelers and Virginia Tech Hokies.

Preceded in death by brothers William Gittings, Kenneth (Dana) Gittings and sister Freda Ridgeway, David is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lula, sisters Erna (Albert) Scott, and Delores Brown. He leaves behind his cherished children Debbie Neal, David (Kim) Gittings Jr., and Lisa Gittings, as well as 6 grandchildren including Dion, Aaron, Everett (Katie), Niesha, Keyona and Briana (Stanthony), 5 great-grandchildren including Keyvon, Aayliah, Katrina, Harper and Harley, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

David’s memory will be treasured by all who knew him.
