Chauncey Morse Obituary

Chauncey James Morse was born on August 3, 1957, in Canton, OH to the union of Velvayne Lassiter and Ronald Morse. When Chauncey was two years old, Velvayne met the love of her life, Donald Smith who lovingly embraced Chauncey as his son

. Growing up in the 1960s left an impression on Chauncey and he remained socially conscious, fully aware of the teachings of Dr, Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X. These were also the years of great music and Motown was the music of the day. This was the soundtrack of his childhood.

Chauncey attended Baxter Elementary and then Greenfield Jr, High where he excelled in math, science, and art. In 1975, he earned his high school diploma from Westinghouse High School. He was a proud Bulldog. He played basketball and graduated with a full scholarship to The Community College of Allegheny County - Boyce Campus (CCAC). While attending CCAC he continued to play basketball and majored in Drafting and Engineering, earning an Associates Degree in Science.

Chauncey loved sports. He played baseball, football, and basketball, winning many trophies and eventually coaching little league baseball. He also played in several basketball leagues.

In September 1980, Chauncey was blessed with the birth of his son Jerrod who he affectionately called “firstborn”. He described this as one of the most impactful events of his life. This joy was compounded when he welcomed his second son, Devin in 1984. Both sons were very important to Chauncey and he loved them deeply.

Chauncey was spiritual and came to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ in his mid 20’s. He was known for his faith along with conversations reminding us that someone bigger than us is in charge.

Chauncey had a great work ethic which led him to work several jobs including Coca-Cola, Volkswagen, and American Airlines (formerly US Airways). Working for American Airlines allowed him to travel and he gave this same opportunity to family and friends. He was loved by his co-workers and they considered him a friend. After 25+ years, Chauncey retired from American Airlines as a Drafting Supervisor in August 2018.

Chauncey was social. He enjoyed taking cruises, watching sports (especially The Pittsburgh Steelers), listening to music, and going to concerts. He saw everyone from Marvin Gaye to Gil Scott-Heron. With a warm smile and infectious laugh, Chauncey was happiest when he was around family and friends.

Chauncey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 28th at his home. He is preceded in death by his mother Velvayne, father Ronald, son Devin, and his sister Beverly. He leaves to mourn: his son Jerrod Sr, father Donald, sisters Stefany and Jamie, brothers Ronald, Elliott, and Darrin, 2 grandsons Deshawn and Jerrod Jr, 1 granddaughter, and a host of other loving family and friends. Chauncey will be missed by all of us,
