Arthur Ronald Carter, fondly known as Coach Art or Mr. C. was called home; Saturday, July 22nd, 2023. He was born August 25th, 1939, to Emily Carter. He and his four older siblings were raised on Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
A proud veteran, he served his country honorably as a member of the United States Marine Corps from Feb. 1957 to Nov. 1961. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Pittsburgh and married JoAnne (Scales) Carter and went on to have two children: Blaine Christopher Carter and Beth Ann Carter.
He worked for Pittsburgh’s Port Authority and eventually retired. He then went on to work for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette where he made a host of friends.
Mr. C. never met a stranger engaging all he knew and even those he didn’t; with great conversations about sports, music – specifically jazz, politics, and the Marine Corps. He was a dedicated Steeler fan, often traveling to games with the DMV.
He was a member of the WEMCO club, the Elks, and an avid and accomplished cook. He is known for his famous BBQ sauce known as Mr. C’s, as well as his BBQed pig feet and potato salad.
He leaves to honor in his memory his children: son Blaine (Kim) Carter and daughter Beth Ann Carter. Grandchildren: Christopher Carter, Troy Carter, and Tyrah (Jerome) Carter-Burleigh all from Pittsburgh, and Blake Covington of Maryland. Five Great-grandchildren: Jayce and Taylor Burleigh, Chaya, Troy Jr., and Nova Carter of Pittsburgh. Older sister, June Carter of Pittsburgh, and a host of nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alfred, sisters Helen and Florence, and his beloved grandson, Julian Carter
