Andrew Price McNeill Jr., the oldest child of Andrew Price McNeill Sr. and Marjorie Maynor Banks, was born on August 25, 1946, in Wake County North Carolina. He spent his childhood going to school and working in the field with his family. His family then moved to Pittsburgh PA after the death of his father.
Andrew discovered his love of running early, and after arriving in Pittsburgh he participated in track and field. As a member of the track team at Schenley High School, he earned the respect of his teammates and set school records as a talented sprinter.
A worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare for almost 30 years, Andrew started as an income maintenance caseworker, providing black Pittsburgh residents in need of help with an advocate who looked like them and understood their struggle. Andrew was a fierce advocate, and while working for the state he was active in the PA state employee SEIU, holding various offices, including shop steward. His record of defending union members stands unblemished.
Andrew had many passions, chief among them spending time with his family. He also enjoyed refurbishing houses, watching old westerns, Saturday morning movies, and long drives playing classic r&b.
On Tuesday, December 23, 2020, Andrew went home to be with our Lord, in the presence of his beloved wife, after a brave battle with cancer. He will be remembered for many things, including his fierce loyalty, sense of humor, the crinkle of his eyes when he smiled, and the way he loved to sing—always off-key.
He is preceded in death by his father Andrew Price McNeill Sr., Brothers Charles and Jerry McNeill and sister Peggy Rose; and step-daughter Kellie Hankinson. Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his mother Marjorie Maynor-Banks; Wife Stephanie Hankinson McNeill; children Andrew McNeill III, Fidel McNeill Sr. and Myra McNeill; step-son Kenny Hankinson; brother Donald Royal; and sisters Mary McNeill, Deborah Royal, and Theresa Washington; as well as grandchildren and step-grandchildren and a host of other family members and devoted friends
