William "Chick" M. Smith

William Matthew Smith went to his heavenly home Thursday, November 15th, 2018. William was known to friends and family as Chick. He was born November 3rd 1940 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to the late William and Ella Smith. He was the fourth of 9 children.

Chick was educated in the Pittsburgh and Wilkinsburg school systems. He then entered the United States Marine Corps in 1962, after basic training he served at Guantanamo Bay and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. Chick was a Corporal E-4 and received the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal Award. He was released from service in 1966 with an honorable discharge.

Chick worked as a welder and a machine operations specialist and repairman for many years. he also held a few other jobs. He later worked at and retired from the Wilkinsburg School District. He started working at an early age to help his mother. Chick loved working with his hands and was always tinkering with and fixing things. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Leah Smith and Cynthia Hamilton and his wife Connie Smith. He is survived by his siblings Nina West (Ike), Donald E. Smith, Elaine Sewell, Daniel L. Smith, Barbara Smith and Frances Jones (Terry), stepchildren, Kim and Devon Williams, his Aunt Helen Alexandra, his ex-wife Lena Wimms- Smith, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Chick had a wonderful personality. He was witty with a great sense of humor and could bring a smile to your face and laughter to your heart. He also was a very kind and generous man. We will miss our William and he will always hold a special place in our hearts. He was our mothers chick.

God saw you getting tired and knew you could not go on so he put his arms around you and whispered "come to me". A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.
