Mona Marie Lawrence Brooks was born on November 24, 1965 at Old Harbour Bay, Jamaica, where she was affectionately known as Marcia. She was the child of Neville G. Lawrence and Clover (Shirley) Hamilton. She fell asleep in death on June 9, 2019 after a long battle with cancer at her home. She leaves to mourn her loss, two children, Shanice Marie Brooks and Alegra Leanna Brooks, two grandchildren, Sasha and Naomi, her father, Neville G. Lawrence, her stepmother, Lucricia and her siblings: Mark (Marjorie) Lawrence, Dawn (John) Allen, Theodore Henderson and Stacie Lawrence. Her mother, Clover (Shirley) Hamilton, and her siblings: Sharon, Glen Roy, Christine, Danette, Odette and Philip. Mona spent her early years with her Grandmother, Alice, her grandfather Austin, and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. Her life changed in February, 1976, when she was brought to Pittsburgh, PA to live with her father and step mother. Mona had been a very sickly child but finally began to thrive. When her sight and hearing were corrected, we really began to see Mona’s strength and resilience. Mona attended Penn Hills School District and graduated from there in 1985. She studied the bible for many years and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This lead to her being assigned in the full-time service for a period of time. That showed us who Mona really was. She loved helping people. She worked with disabled persons, ran her own day care, drove a school bus and up until the last week of her life took care of Alzheimer patients. Mona’s kindness was also evident in the number of people she took into her house—some stayed a short time, some a long time. We especially remember a sister she called, Momma T, who was a great friend to her. You can say that Mona did not let the cancer define her but overcame numerous obstacles in dealing with it. Contrary to what her doctors said, she continued to fight to the end. As a result, she was blessed to see her daughters become adults and even get to know her grandchildren. That, was Mona Lawrence Brooks.
