A Time to Be Born: Lolene More Favor of Chicago, IL was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on December 19, 1927 to the late George Umphrey and Bessie Mary Bell Umphrey. She was their only child. A Time to Live and Nurture: Lolene loved to learn. She received a diploma from Keller’s School of Dressmaking and Design in 1948 and a vocational education certificate of Occupational Competency in 1977. Continuing her education, she earned a Professional Certification from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, in 1983. Her passion to serve and nurture other’s showed in all levels of her life. She was a Master seamstress, activity leader for the Hill House, a volunteer at Garfield Jubilee Association and taught in the Pittsburgh Public Schools as a substitute teacher. She continued to learn and challenge herself and was currently taking piano lessons and practicing Spanish with her grandson, Charles. Lolene loved to serve: At an early age she gave her life to the Lord and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church where she worshiped and served the Lord for over 85 years. In her Golden years, she ran the Senior Ministry at Ebenezer Baptist Church until she founded the Avenue Birthday Club in Braddock, PA in 2015. Her senior’s birthday club honored the its members by having a monthly birthday celebration for them. She was a Senior Sitter and private care giver. She also opened her home to many displaced individuals ranging from the homeless to young men and their families. She would take her tenants to the food bank and offered them clothes from the shop she started in her home. Lolene loved to sing: Up until her passing she was an active member of the Lemington Gospel Corral directed by Derrick Thyme Choir, which she was the oldest and a founding member. Traveling to several singing engagements, she had the opportunity to bless others and herself through song. She was honored as one of the oldest members with a birthday song dedicated to her during the mayor’s inauguration. Lolene loved her family: She was a loving and caring wife to her husband of 10 years, Edward Hugh Favor and for the past 10 years was accompanied by her best friend and companion Charles Foster. She was known as the mother and grandmother of many. Her most joyful times were spent caring for her adopted family members and their children. She loved to travel and often traveled to Ohio to visit family. At 90 years old she took a 10 day road trip with her love- daughter Gloria to visit her first cousins in Jackson, Tennessee. A Time to Rest: Lolene made her final journey to Glory on December 10, 2019. She rested on her favorite couch surrounded by those she served and her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Umphrey and leaves to cherish her Love -daughter’s Gloria Potter and Chandra (Dwight) Law, grandchildren Meleak, Charles, Abigail Potter, and Monroe Law; her first cousins, Harry (Barbara) Bell and Nathaniel Bell , Jackson TN; God-daughter Derise S. Stovall, Esquire; Philadelphia PA; her adopted grandchild, Pamela Sloan and her great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; her close companion for 10 years Charles Foster and a host of cousins, numerous adopted families and friends.
