Gwendolyn Moore Obituary

Gwendolyn Yvonne Moore affectionately known as“Gwen” to family and friends was on born August 3, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Gurthrie M. Wright and Jessie Mae Hatcher Wright. Gwen was raised in the Garfield and Homewood communities. She received her education at Fort Pitt Elementary School and was a graduate of Westinghouse High School. Gwen continued her pursuit of education at the University of Pittsburgh where she received her degree in 1974.

On July 25, 1955, Gwen was united in marriage to the love of her life, the late George Edward Moore and this union was blessed with one daughter, Renee Jean Moore whom Gwen adored. For many years, Gwen was employed by the Children’s Institute (formerly known as the Home for Crippled Children). Her career with the Children’s Institute started in the mid-sixties as a Child Care Worker. Gwen had a genuine love and interest in her work career. She remained a dedicated employee until 1999, when she retired as a 4sp Unit Manager at the Institute. For over 36 years, Gwen was the Miss Black Teenage Pageant Coordinator. During her tenure as Coordinator, she coined the phrase, “Wear your CAP” known as confidence, awareness and pride to the pageant staff and contestants. Gwen also volunteered for the Mister African Program. She was active in the Pearl Street Block Club and worked the election polls in the Wilkinsburg community. Her mission in life was to help others. Gwen was always a positive, upbeat person and a friend to all who knew her. She was a dedicated wife, mother, friend, mentor and volunteer.

Peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at Shadyside Hospital, Gwen transitioned from life on earth to eternal rest. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Guthrie M. Wright, Jr. Gwen leaves to treasure her memory, her daughter, Renee Jean Moore, sister and brother in-law, Laha Jean Jamison and Roland Jamison of Riverside, CA, brother and sister in-law, Calvin and Joan Moore of Swissvale, PA,, brother in-law, Alfred Moore of Broken Arrow, OK, cousins, Danise Cain, Pastor, Daniel C. Page of Pittsburgh, PA, Patricia Hicks, and Asheigh Hicks both of Pikesville, MD. Also survived by other relatives and friends who will cherish her memory.
