Florence Momon Smith was born June 2, 1926 to the late Romalus Momon and Annie Demmons Momon in Thompson, GA, McDuffie County.  The sixth of seven children, Florence had three brothers and three sisters.  The family later moved to Atlanta, GA.

She gave her life to the Lord at an early age and joined West Hunter Street Baptist Church where she was very active and involved in different church activities.  She received her education in the Atlanta School System and graduated from Washington High School.  After graduating from high school, she attended Spelman College and later went to New York to continue her schooling and work, only to return to Atlanta.

On September 27, 1953, she married Edgar L. Smith, Jr. and moved to Pittsburgh, PA.  Born to this union was their only child Teresa Jean.  Florence was married to Edgar for 56 years until their separation by his death.

Florence was an active member of the community.  She joined First Baptist Church of Penn Hills, PA, was the treasurer of the Lincoln Park Young Adult Urban League Unit and was president of the East End Legal Assistance Fund.

Florence went back to school to continue her education and graduated from Community College of Allegheny County with an Associate in Science on May 14, 1976.  Then, she continued at the University of Pittsburgh where she graduated in 1978 with a double major which awarded her a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Child Development and Child Care.  After graduating, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Wilkinsburg School District until she retired.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Florence traveled to different states to expose her daughter, Teresa, to the vast wonders of our country and emphasizing to her grandson, Michael, the importance of a good education often making her interaction with him an opportunity to learn.

On November 2, 2017, Florence went to home to be with her Lord.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Julia Haygood, Johnny Momon, Alberta Gunby, Willie Momon, Annie Bea Spears and her beloved husband, Edgar L. Smith, Jr.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Teresa Hickman, grandson Michael Hickman, Brother James Momon, brothers-in-law Wendall Smith (Barbara), Arnold Smith (Sandra) and a host of family and friends.
