Ernestine G. Nelson was born on February 5, 1924 in Newberry, South Carolina to Robert F. Gladden and Lillie Mae Wallace.

In 1950 she and John J. Nelson were married in Holy Matrimony.  They shared more than fifty-eight years together.  Of this union two children were born, Joan and Jane.

Ernestine attended South Carolina State University, earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Cheyney University and completed her Master's Degree in Education from Temple University.

She began her teaching career with the Neshimany School District and taught second grade for more than twenty-five years.  She was beloved by children, parents and staff.  For many years after her retirement from Poquessing Elementary School, she enjoyed volunteering with the American Red Cross, the Dominican Retreat House, and with Pastoral Care at Holy Redeemer Hospital.  She was a faithful and active member of St. James Church in Elkins Park for fifty years.

Ernestine was a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, N.A.A.C.P., National Council of Negro Women and the National and Pennsylvania Education Associations.

After her move from Elkins Park to Pittsburgh, she enjoyed living in her apartment at Juniper Village  Assisted Living.  "Miss Ernestine" was lovingly cared for by the staff and administration.  She loved and was genuinely concerned for everyone.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, her sister and her two brothers.

Ernestine will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.  She is survived by her two daughters, Joan N. Morton (Raymond) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Jane C. Nelson of Lincoln Park, NJ; two grandchildren, Jamella (Pittsburgh, PA and Raymond Jr.... (Catherine) of Monroeville, PA; two great-grandchildren, Khai John and Charlotte Avery and many relatives and friends.

Submitted with Love,

The Family
